To understand why Anti-Oxidants are important we need to first understand what Free Radicals are.

From Rice University: Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.

Free radicals are thief's, they steal electrons from wherever they can find them. Once these electrons are gone they leave behind damaged, broken cells that can lead to premature aging, sun spots or a myriad of other skin conditions, including cancer. When we provide anti-oxidants, with an electron to spare, it neutralizes the free radical with that electron, sparing our healthy cells from damage.

A large number of the Free Radicals found on our skin are caused by radiation (UVA and UVB) from the sun and damaging particles found in polluted air. These Free Radicals cause the same damage to your skin that they cause to our internal cells. When these Free Radicals break down the collagen in your skin, you may get fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet from a loss of elasticity. When Free Radicals damage your melanocytes, you get age spots. So of course our best course of protection is to apply products that will protect our skin before going out for the day and then to wash it all off and apply rejuvenating products at night.

Many companies may claim to have anti-oxidants in their products but often times these lower quality ingredients become inactive and ineffective once they are introduced to the oxygen in the air.  Using high-quality Anti-Oxidants is important to preserve their free-radical fighting capacity, even after exposure to oxygen. This allows anti-oxidants to fight, trap and prevent damaging free-radicals from leaving damage on or in the skin, protecting your complexion.
