Gin + Tonic? Nope, Skin + Tonic.
Tonic, Toner, Astringent – call it what you may but what is it? Typically, it refers to a lotion or rinse designed to purify the skin and minimize the appearance of pores on the face. As with most things, not all toners are created equally.
An often forgotten or skipped step in a skin care routine, Toner will help to cleanse the skin and improve the overall appearance of your complexion. Using the wrong toner can lead down a bad skin path however.Using a toner without a balanced pH, with alcohol or bacteria-laded ingredients will result in dry, sensitive or even red-irritated skin.
When used correctly, a toner will be your new BFF. You want to use a toner that is made with botanical based ingredients that promotes skin regeneration, helps to retain elasticity and penetrates deeply to help purify the pores. With a slightly acidic base, ideally between a pH 5-6, a quality toner will work help to clean up any bacteria, dead skin or oil left behind after cleansing but more importantly, helps to restore the precious pH balance to your complexion.
Skin is naturally slightly acidic with a pH level of approximately 4.5 – 5.5. Once your skin’s pH level goes above 6.5, the acid mantle (a fine layer on the skin to keep out bacteria and pollutants) gets compromised, and your skin becomes at risk to microbes and infections. Toner works to restore your skin’s pH balance to keep your body’s largest organ (the skin!) healthy and defensible.
Should you use toner with acne prone skin? YES! But do not use one that is alcohol based. It seems counter-intuitive but overly drying the skin, which alcohol does, will absolutely lead to more breakouts.Your skin will produce even more oil to compensate for the dry, tight feeling in your skin creating a soap-opera-esque circle that none of us want. Using a toner will help to lessen the feeling of oil on your skin and remove excess oil without removing that important acid-mantle, the oil-barrier your skin requires, to be healthy. Bonus, clean pores appear smaller than those clogged with darker, oxidized oil and bacteria.
