Ever wake up and feel surprised to see that ugly acne spot staring back at you in the mirror? Do you feel betrayed by your skin care products?

Chances are that if your skin care regimen works well for you most of the time, this is probably caused by stress or environmental factors, not your skincare.

One of the biggest contributing factors to an onset of acne, skin rashes, and outbreaks of other dermatological problems (like Eczema and Psoriasis) is STRESS. And it's the time of year that a high percentage of adults report feeling the most stressed (happy holidays!) and it’s 2020.

So what exactly is happening to your skin when you stress?

"Stress causes a chemical reaction in your body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, which tells your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Oily skin is more prone to acne and other skin problems. In addition, stress can also make it harder for skin problems to heal."

Our skin is an outward appearance to the health of our bodies so take heed when you notice your skin sending you messages.  What to do? Do not skip steps or abandon your skin care routine. Add additional moisturizers, even or especially, when you feel oily. Cleansing the skin is not just good for washing off your makeup but treat it as a moment to wash away your day.  Be careful not to over wash or exfoliate the skin however, that will only invite  your skin to produce even more oil.

Here are three things you can do in less than five minutes to help your skin and your stress.

  1. Take an extra 30 seconds to gently massage your moisturizer or nourishing cream into your skin.  This small act of kindness towards yourself can go a long way towards feeling some relief.
  2. Give yourself a foot rub. Use a luxurious lotion that infuses the skin with a penetrating vitamin complex, omega fatty acids and anti-oxidants.
  3. Swap your sugary drinks for water. Our bodies, but especially our skin, needs hydration to look and be its very best.

Of course there are many things to do to reduce your stress overall and we recommend do whatever it takes to soothe your frazzled soul - including taking a walk or getting some exercise.  Meditate.  Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. And then get some sleep.
